Raul, Thanks for those references. The legal opinion is very disconcerting. As there are cases which have been approved, it would be critical to know in what circumstances, approvals have been granted. I suspect they may have been in cases of those whose grandparents had been born on the Iberian Pen...

Hola Raul, My father who is 81 and also interested in recouping his Spanish nationality tried to get his father's birth certificate at the Registro Demografico of his town. His father was born 1877. My dad was told that the RD was not in existence at that time and therefore his only option was to ge...

Hola Carlos!

follow-up to nzraul
Hola Raul, There has been progress, however, it is not useful to either of us. Since last year, the previously proposed changes have been modified to be more focused to individuals who were deprived spanish nationality as a result of the Spanish Civil War. The grandchildren of such exiles will be ab...

Raul, I have been in contact with the Spanish Consulate in New York as well as in San Juan. I have obtained my paternal grandparents baptismal and death certificates. Seems like it should be straightforward, however, I expect some setbacks. First, as things currently stand, one would contact the Spa...

Slight modification of prior posting
On further follow-up I note that things are not exactly as have been reported in the press. The law has been approved by the Spanish Senate. It now must be approved by the Spanish Congress. It is hoped they will do this in July before going off on vacation. All political parties have supported this ...

Revisions have been approved for changes to nationality law
To all: This is the moment many of us have been awaiting. The Spanish government has approved changes to the "codigo civil" which will allow grandchildren of Spaniards who emigrated to opt for Spanish citizenship WITHOUT the one year residency in Spain. Art and Bob this is it!!! Not much i...

terechu, I was under the impression from the articles which have reported on this matter that the the ministry of justice has 4-6 months to work out the details of this issue. As I read it, the changes were required by the law back in december 2006 and the revision is now mandated with action requir...

Update: Bob, Art and Carlos, Thank you kindly for your replies and advice. I have been in communications with the Spanish Consulate. Here is the scoop: Puerto Ricans born in Puerto Rico prior to 1898 were Spanish citizens under the Constitution of Spain 1873. As my grandparents met this qualificatio...

Bob, As you can see from Carlos' reply, Puerto Ricans were considered citizens prior to 1898. Based on that, I can claim nationality in Spain through my grandparents after one year's residency. That's much better than having to do it after 10 years which is the usual course. Still wouldn't it be bet...

Bob, Thank you kindly for your prompt and helpful response. I did further research which may be of interest to other Puerto Ricans. Under the Constitution of 1876, the benefits of which were extended to Puerto Ricans in 1881, Puerto Ricans in the late 1800's enjoyed full status as citizens of Spain....
