Soy nieto de españoles por ambas parties y resido en los EE.UU. Mis padres nacieron en Cuba y mis abuelos en Asturias (Concejo de Salas) y Galicia (Ourense). La nueva ley requiere ciertos documentos - como certificados de matrimonio y de nacimiento - que necesito procurar de Cuba. ¿Cómo puedo conseguir estos documentos desde los EE.UU.? También, si tengo el número del pasaporte español de mi abuela española, ¿cómo puedo conseguir una copia de este pasaporte? Espero que me pódéis dar una ayudita.

As I understand it, the regulations for the law have not yet been completed, but will be published (and made official) in December 2008, as the new law itself was in December 2007. On the Asturian side, you can write to the appropriate registro civil for Spanish birth certificates back to 1871 or so (some were destroyed in the guerra civil), and to the local parish for baptismal certificates. I assume the same is true for your gallego ancestors.

Have your tried writing to the ministerio de justicio about the passport copy?

As far as records in Cuba go, I have no idea, but one of our moderators is a cubana and she may have some ideas.

You can also explore http://groups.msn.com/nietosporlaciudadania for more information and ideas. There is a Cuban section at that website (you will have to join first) and some people with a good grasp of the situation.

Do you have a contact or email address for the MOJ regarding requesting a copy of the passport?

I got the fax information for the Registro Civil in Grado which services Salas, but I do not have the tomo and folio information so I cannot request the certificates through the MOJ online request website. Did you fax the request to the Registro Civil when you got your documents? Am I better off calling them?

I checked out the HyN USA and Cuba websites for information about the Cuban documents. I gather that I have 3 main options:

1. Travel to Cuba, visit the varios Registros and then authenticate the documents with the Spanish embassy.
2. Travel to Washington DC and request the documents from the Cuban interest section of the Swiss embassy. I understood from the comments that it is unlikely that they will respond by mail or email. Is this the experience of any of the group members?
3. Pay a Cuban service to obtain the documents, e.g. Consejería Jurídica Internacional. Has any group member had any experience with them?

Am I missing any other alternatives that have proven successful? Has anyone had any experience seeking these documents from the Cuban embassy in Spain, even though we reside outside of Spain?

For a copy of the passport (or passport number) all I can suggest is to write to the MOJ or explore its website. I have no experience in this area.

As I understand it, online requests for documents apply primarily to the larger registros civiles. My own experience has been limited to writing a letter and waiting for a response. It took months, but the requested documents eventually arrived. At present, there may be a backlog because of the recent strike that affected not only Asturias but several other areas.

Cuban documents are also beyond my experience, but posting a request for help on the website may eventually lead to a response. Posting a request for help on HyNE (US, Cuba and general areas) may also be valuable.

Like you, I am interested in obtaining Spanish citizenship (dual citizenship, actually), and I will post anything I learn on this website. I suspect that not much will happen in term of implementing the new law until December 2008.

Thanks, Bob. I´ll look at the other site you mentioned. By the way, it seems that the proper Ministry to obtain information about passports is the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores and not the Ministerio de Justicia. They referred me to the Spanish consulate in Cuba, since my grandparents lived there.

¿Algún miembro tiene experiencia de trámites con el consulado español de Miami? ¿Cómo se comportan con los pedidos de documentos y la presentación de la solicitud para la ciudadanía? ¿Cuál método de comunicación funciona mejor con ellos? Les he enviado correos electrónicos pero no contestan.

Has any group member any experience dealing with the Spanish consulate in Miami? How do they handle document requests and citizenship applications? What's the best way to communicate with them? I've sent them emails, but they don´t reply.
