In the case of my grandparents, to find work, to meet other family members who had come to the US before them, and to avoid forced military service. There were zinc smelteres in the US, and that is the work that my grandfather was familiar with.

My grandparents also came to the US for a better life. They were zinc workers. They worked in the zinc mills of Asturias and they could come here and do the same kind of work. It was hot, dirty work and not an easy life. That's all they knew: hard work. But it was a better life. The ones that came before us were a strong people. I just hope that we can be just as strong.

well thanks for the replies. It is likely my husbands family came for the
same reasons. I just think it's so interesting and a shame that not much is
known about his family. I hope I figure it out one day.

My Maternal and Fraternal Grandparents came to this country in the early 1900's. They also came for a better life. They settled in Clarksburg and Moundsville West Virginia and worked in the zinc mines.
My Maternal Grandlparents stayed in ths Country until they passed in 1942 and 1964. My Fraternal Grandparents saved their money and returned to Spain in the 1920. They bought a farm in Asturias and were there until they both died. Their children stayed in this country.
