Joe - Is there any chance you have relatives in East St. Louis/Fairmont City, IL? There are lots of Suarezes and Cuetos there.

Please do not hesitate to go to Asturias without a tour guide. Whoeve advised you would be foolish to do so is completely wrong. I have not posted in a while, but I just had to reply to this. I visted Asturias with my Dad, AUnt, niece, son and girlfriend in August. I wil admit, my Aunt speaks decent...

Personally - I would love to see the West Virgina area. It sems that so many Asturian lives are connected to that area. Is the area easily accessible by air? Another idea is St. Louis. Plenty of non-stop, affordable flights, lots of meeting space alternatives....a small, but vibrant Asturian communi...

Terechu - I can't believe it took so long for me to reply to this post! I meant to long ago. But...after much family discussion, it was decided that your response was the most likely by far. My father's hair was and is a big mass of black curls. He was much doted on by his aunts and they loved to st...

Las Chavalas?

Does anyone know of a town or village called Las Chavalas? This is listed as the birthplace of my grandmother in the 1890's. It should be close to Oviedo or Aviles. My father, aunt and I are traveling to Asturias in August and would like to visit this place. We cannot find a reference to it on any m...

In our little Spanish-American community the women were also very strong, opinionated and respected. But, I have noticed that there are few photographs of them while I have many old photos of men and groups of men....wonder why? In my family, the definite "head" of the extended family is o...

help with slang term

My dad was amused as I grabbed a handful of my teen son's ample hair and threatened him (all in jest of course.) I often grab his thick hair and hold on, it's the only way to control him! Dad said this reminded him of his tia grabbing his own substantial head of hair as a teen and doing the same thi...

I am sorry your mom didn't remember my dad...he too said it was hard times when he lived in St. Louis, but then added his whole childhood was hard times. I think we can never understand how difficult life was for them. Unfortunately, my father-in-law is dead as are most of his brothers and sisters. ...

Vickie - Have you checked any records in "Cherryvale". My husband's father was born there in SPanish town, but I notice that on his birth certificate the spelling of the town is "Cherryville". Just thought I'd point this out. I'm not sure which is the correct spelling, but record...

My dad had numerous cousins named Louis but my records don't show any married to an Alberta, but that part of our records are inco...

I need a suggestion for a good book to help teach myself spanish. As you know, many names and other words were butchered by immigration officials due to the language barriers. The closest street names I can think of are Vandeventer in St. Louis and Vandalia in Collinsville. Just for further info, here is some general info about the Spanish neighborhoods in the St....
