avesíu: pronounced ah-veh-SEE-ooh, adjective. Variants at avisíu, aviseo, avesigu, visiegu, aveseu. A place of comparative darkness because of the interception of light by objects or nature. A patch of land or farmstead that is in a penumbra or semi-darkness, often overcast or clouded over.
By extension, something that is somber, concealed or protected from encroachers. Synonyms at shady, sheltered, clouded, darkened, dismal, dreary, gray, leaden, murky, nebulous, obscure, veiled or just plain sunless.
Idiomatic usage, as in ‘a l’avesíu’, implies a place with northern exposure.

Nesi prau tarda en curar la yerba, ia mui avesíu. [The grass takes a long time to dry on that field, it’s very sheltered]
La xata ta paciendo nel avesíu. [The young cow is grazing in the shade.]
La caseria de Nolo tira pa lo avesíu. [Nolo’s house has northern exposure.]
Nos valles siempre hai una parte visiega. [In a valley, there’s usually a place that is in the shade.]
