My mom gave me this drink recipe, which originally came from my cousin Maribel of Avilés. I don't think I've ever tasted it, but Maribel is a wonderful cook, so it must be good. First, the Spanish original:
1 liter orujo
1 kilo asucar
1 kilo fresa
Dejar un mes para poder tomar.
Roughly translated:
1 quart orujo (perhaps closest to brandy?)
2.2 pounds sugar
2.2 pounds strawberries
Combine ingredients and then let sit for a month before serving.
Does anyone know what would make a good substitute for orujo?

Orujo
Orujo is roughly equivalent to Italian grappa or French marc. It is distilled from the solids that are left over from making wine. Grappas have become a high profile item, and most grappas are too expensive to substitute for orujo in your recipes. I think that an inexpensive brandy would be the best substitute.
As strawberry season approaches, this recipe become increasingly tempting. I'm going to try it.
