I'm looking for anyone with last names Fernandez-Valdes or Lopez-Villamil. My great-grandfather emigrated to Cuba in the 1800's; was a carpenter; some of his relatives from Asturias went to the US, but he stayed in Cuba and raised a family. There were seven children (all gone now). My father died one month ago and I would like to trace his roots (for my children).
Thank you.

Hi, Alline, wellcome to the forum.
Are Fernández-Valdés and López-Villamil composed surnames or two different surnames as the current Spanish system? It is to say:
Fernández-Valdés or Fernández and Valdés? López-Villamil or López and Villamil?
Fernández and López are too frequent surnames as for locate them in a concrete place. Valdés is more typical from Western Asturies, but frequent too in the rest of Asturies. Villamil is a typical Western surname. I think that very seemingly your ancestors came from Western Asturies. Have you more informations about?
Cheers

Carlos,
As far as I know the last names were hyphenated. So was Lopez-Villamil.
I just learned that my great-granfather was from Loarca.

Alline, I have done a search in the phone book based in the supposition of composed surnames, on both López-Villamil and Fernández-Valdés. However, the informatic system of the on line formulary is very elementary and does not take in account the hyphenated symbol. The obtained results mix the simple surnames Fernández and Valdés, and the same for López and Villamil.
I can see I was in the right way when I supposed a Western Asturian origin, as also is the location of Luarca.
I think it's preferable be sure about the hyphenated. Have you some document of identity, passport or similar where will be write as so? What is the complete name of your great-grandfather? Do you know his birthdate?
I can advance to you that two majors of the city of Oviedo have had this last name. Nowadays there is a Procurator of Justice Courts named Juan Corujo y López-Villamil.

Hi Carlos.
I'll have to check with surviving family members to get more information. I'm thinking that perhaps the combined names are a thing of the past. I'll see if anyone has a birth date.
Thank you so much.
Aline
