Post by is »

Cuitu: pronounced COO-ee-too. Cuchu: pronounced COO-choo. Sustantivu (noun). Cuitu is chiefly West Asturian, Cuchu is its equivalent in Central Asturian.

Cow dung mixed with urine, straw, ferns or other organic material in the barnyard bedding and later re-used as manure in the Asturian countryside. Nitrogen-rich fecal matter of cows reused as a natural substance to fertilize soil and support plant growth. Anything regarded as dirty and malodorous. Cuitu verde refers to fresh manure.

Irish Gaelic, cac or bualtrach. Swedish, gödsel. Italian, concime. French, fumier. German, Mist or Duenger. Russian, navoz. Synonyms at dung, feces, excreta, bullshit, muck.

Usage examples:

Xose L.luis marchou cuitar los praos de pa Porqueira. [Xose L.luis went to spread dung over the fields near Porqueira]

Tu sabes el trabayu que ye cuchar tolos dies? [Do you know how hard it is to take out the cow dung from the barn every day?]

Tocome cuchar nos praos de l’argayu. [It was left to me to fertilize the fields near the landslide]

Idiomatic expressions:

Dios y el cuchu pueden munchu, pero sobretou el cuchu. [God and manure are powerful, but manure is even more powerful]

Nun dara la tierra muncho como-y echen poco cuchu. [Soil will not be bountiful if you don’t give it enough manure]

Esa cancion fiede a cuchu. [That song has a whiff of manure, i.e., it comes from the heartland]

I'm happy to find yet another term that I can apply to politics. The possibilities are almost endless.

Luckily, I did not go into graphic detail about additional components of cuitu/cuchu. Their application to politics would be a brutal concoction and certainly not fit for cocktail hours.

But feel free to use the word as an equivalent to bullshit. In that case, the expressions in Asturian could be:

'Eso ia una pila cuitu' (West Asturian)
'Eso ye una pila cuchu' (Central Asturian)

Literally, 'that's a bunch of BS'.
