A Texas hello: Lloyd Fernandez, San Antonio TX

Post by Lloyd »

Hello. I am new to this great forum and currently reside in San Antonio, Tx with my wife Jean. I was born in Neodesha Kansas to Lloyd C. and Patty Fernandez. My late father was born in Cherryvale Kansas in 1926 to Joe Arias and Edith Fernandez. My Grandfather and his father both worked at the Cherryvale zinc smelter plant. My great grandfather Elisco came to the US from Spain in 1909. He brought his wife Grace and children Sarah, Elisco and Joe ( Caesar) ( my grandfather) first to somewhere in Oklahoma and then Cherryvale. Three more children were born there; Tony, Connie and Olga. I joined this forum to learn more about my spanish heritage and these family members who have all passed. My grandfather Joe was born in Castrillon. Hopefully, I will learn more about them and the country they immigrated from through the members here. I've already gained much knowledge as I read the different forums. Thanks for letting me in the door.

Welcome to the forum, Lloyd (in Asturian that would be, 'Que t'afayes nesti foru, Lloyd' or simply, 'Bienllegau al foru').

Your family history is certainly traceable. If you keep posting under the Genealogy tab, you will eventually find distant cousins. Or not too distant, if it was your grandfather Joe who was born in Castrillon.

Try to use keywords like 'Castrillon' for future internal searches here. Instead of casting a wide net, it may be quicker to make your queries under that keyword than under 'Fernandez', which is extremely common in Asturias.

Thanks very much, Is. Appreciate the lesson in Asturian language although I don't speak spanish. I'll try your search approach to this website; I already went through all forums using "Cherryvale" as the key word and obtained some good and interesting info. Next I'll use "Castrillon.' What a great site I have discovered here. Thanks again.

Another, often better, way to search the site is to use Google. You can limit the search to include only this website if you add this to your search phrase:
site:asturianus.org

So you could search for:
site:asturianus.org castrillon
or
site:asturianus.org castrillón

I don't think the accent on the "ó" is necessary with Google, but it may be with our site's search tool.

-------------------------

Otro método de buscar la página, de vez y cuando mejor, es usar Google. Se puede limitar el búsqueda a este página por añadir éste al frase de búsqueda:
site:asturianus.org

Entonces, se puede buscar por:
site:asturianus.org castrillon
o
site:asturianus.org castrillón

No creo que se necesita el acento en el "ó" con Google, pero es posible que se precisa con el buscadora de este sitio.

Thanks so much for the advice, Art. I've already learned so much about where my relatives lived and the possible reasons that they immigrated to Cherryvale, Ks. I was always bewildered why they would choose such a small middle America town to live. Now I know.......Zinc.

Cherryvale (KS) is where my grandparents first settled in 1913, following the zinc industry, then St. Louis, then Spelter (WV) and finally Niagara Falls.

Bob, it sure is a small world, isn't it? Have you heard of Louise Brooks, the silent screen actress? She was born in the very Cherryvale house my Grandpa Joe later bought and lived in until his passing. My Mom currently lives in that house. Vivian Vance, of "I Love Lucy" fame, was also born in Cherryvale. Quite a history for such a small town. Take care.
