This should be taken strictly for what it's worth, but for those interested (age from 18 to 27 years), there are 105 openings for Asturias in the Spanish army. You don't have to be a Spanish national to enlist. So, those who love the military life or like to come live here, you know what you can do

Esto deberá tomarse estrictamente por lo que vale, pero para aquéllos (de edades entre 18 y 27 años) que estén interesados, hay convocadas 105 plazas en el ejército español para Asturias. No hace falta tener nacionalidad española para alistarse al ejército. Así que a los que les guste la vida militar o quieran venir a vivir aquí, ya saben lo que pueden hacer

I'm a tad too old to take advantage of this front door back into Asturias, but it would be tempting. At the very least I'd probably learn Spanish quite well. If I--or many Asturian-Americans--were to accept this opportunity, it would be very ironic. My grandfather--and many of our grandfathers--left Asturias in part to avoid military service.

Estoy un poco demasiado viejo aprovechar de este "puerto de la calle" (una apertura que se usa directamente, sin preocupación o sigilo) para volver a Asturias, pero sería tentador. ¡Al menos probablamente aprenderé castellano muy bién! Si yo--o muchos Asturianos-Americanos--aceptemos este oportunidad, resulte muy irónico. Mi abuelo--y muchos de nuestros abuelos--salieron de Asturias en parte para esquivar el mili.

Ha! Art, you're entirely correct! My great-grandfather, Jose Vallina, came to America for just this reason.

Apparently, during the war in Marruecos (Morocco) around the turn of the last century, the Spanish army had a lot of conscription going on, and my great-grandfather decided it was a safer bet to take the first boat out of Xixón to America than the next transport ship to Morocco.

He eventually made it to WV, and, almost 100 years later, here we are!

Xose, it wasn't until a few years ago that I realized that my political stances probably owed something to my grandfather's. It's interesting how these things can get carried down the generations, although perhaps sometimes as a reaction against (rather than accord with).

My grandfather also left Asturias partly out of fear of conscription for the war in Morocco.

Tradicionalmente los asturianos, solemos ser abondo insumisos, nun nos presta muncho dir a facer les guerres d'otros. Asina nel sieglu XVI, demientres el restu de los pueblos hispánicos facíen hestoria, nós diciemos que nun podíamo dir a guerrear porque tábamos afamiaos. Tamién yera tradicional mancase adrede, pa llibrase del serviciu militar.


Tradicionalmente los asturianos, solemos ser bastante insumisos, no nos gusta mucho hacer las guerras de otros. Así en el siglo XVI, mientras el resto de los pueblos hispánicos hacían historia, nosotros decíamos que no podíamos ir a guerrear porque estábamos hambrientos. También era tradicional hacerse daño a proposito, pa librarse del servicio militar.
