When my father left Asturias

Post by ABILIO »

My father was born in San Martin de Podes.
The few things we heard from him was that about 1892 when he was only 13 years old he was awaken early in the morning and after being kissed by his mother and father he was send with friends to Cuba. We don't know much about his teenager years, only that he was working in "bodegas", We don't know what kind of education he got , but he had a beautiful handwriting and after joining the army he worked in the military hospital
until he retired, keeping books.
When I first visited my family in Spain I was told that at some time they were getting along with the 20 pesos my father was sending them. My father never told us about that it was his family.
My father never wanted to leave Cuba, but when I and my sisters decided to leave he acepted.
He died a few weeks before he was supossed to leave for the US.

The surnames in my family from San Martin de Podes are Ovies, Artime, Menendez and Mieres. This goes back to the mid-1800s. What are the apellidos in your family?
