Certificacion de naciamento -Maria Consuelo (1896)
Hola,
Gracias,
Jacqueline Maria

My grandmother, Maria Consuelo Luisa Diaz Canon, was born in Gijon and I am writing because I would like a copy of her birth certificate. I think that she was born in San Juan de Tremanes in the municipality of Gijon, Asturias on August 26, 1896. Her brother, Guillermo, was definitely born in San Juan de Tremanes but relatives in Cuba are not sure if my grandmother was born in the same town.
She married Angel Ruiz in Spain, but I don’t have a copy of her marriage certificate.
She and her siblings arrived in Cuba through the Port of Havana on January 3, 1913 on board the Spanish ship ‘Alfonso XIII’.
In Cuban documents she is called ‘Maria Consuelo’ or just ‘Consuelo’ and my mother’s birth certificate notes that Consuelo was born in Spain. We think her father was Ysidro and her mother Maria. We left most of our documentation in Cuba (I now live in NJ but was born in Cuba).
My mother could not obtain any of the certificates online. She did not have a DNI to identify her mother. My mother recently died and we are losing even more history, and we lost the address of a great aunt that lived in Spain. I am very interested in learning more about my roots and documenting this for my children. I would appreciate any assistance in searching for these certificates.
Thanks,
Jacqueline Maria

Welcome, Jacqueline!
Why don't you do a search in the phone book? That could be a quick way to find relatives:
http://blancas.paginasamarillas.es/jsp/home.jsp
You can specify Gijón.

¡Bienvenida, Jacqueline!
Sería una buena idea buscar para la familia en las páginas blancas:

Puedes especificar Gijón.

Hi Art,
Thank you for the reply and the link. My aunt is very old and she is now living with her daughter, but I don't have the daughter's name. We are continuing to search through my mother's papers.
My mother's death was very sudden - a stroke - when she was never ill prior. We couldn't make sense of her notes but could see that she was trying to obtain a copy of her mother's birth certificate, with no luck. I tried the link on line for birth certificates, but they asked for several identifying numbers. I explained in the comments section that I didn't have those numbers, and several months have gone by with no copy of Consuelo's birth certifcate.
Any suggestions on who to contact would be helpful. I am trying to decide who best to write to, and obtained the location of a Mormon geniology center, but it is quite far from my home. I have written to the U.S. authorities to request a copy of her social security application in case there is any information there that can help with the search.
Attached is a picture of the family in later years. She moved with all of her siblings but one to Encrucijada, Cuba. She is seated on the right side. Her brother Guillermo is there (born in Spain) and her sister, Olga, was later born in Cuba.
Regards,
Jacqueline.

When you search the white pages, if you don't know the first name, just type in the last name(s), the province, and the city.
Since your aunt has the same last names as your mother (Díaz Cañon), your cousin (your aunt's daughter) would have your mother's first last name (Díaz) as her second last name (something Díaz).
Leave the first name and the first apellido blank. That will show people with the same last name. Maybe your cousin will appear in the list. Unfortunately, "Díaz" is an extrememly common name. (It means son of Diego and there were lots of Diegos.)
Search on Díaz as second apellido in Gijón, Asturias
Your mom's second last name (Cañon) is unusual, so I'd do a search on that, too, to see if any other relatives show up. If you find one relative, you'll be able to get in touch with the others. You must use the proper accents or it won't work correctly.
Search on Cañon as second apellido in Gijón, Asturias
I'd contact those six people.
There was no one listed in Gijón with first apellido of Cañon.
Search showing 28 people with Cañon as second apellido in all of Asturias (not just Gijón)
Search showing 10 people in Asturias with Cañon as their first apellido
There's a good chance that you have relatives in one of those searches.
There are several people with the last names Diez Cañon.

Art,
Thank you so much for that information. I'm so excited to try it out and see who I can find.
If you have any advice about obtaining the birth certificate that would be very helpful. I have tried online, and also emailed the civil registry. The online request yielded no results (it has been a few months). I did not have the DNI for Consuelo, or her record/book numbers.
I emailed the civil registry this week. Included a copy of my mother's birth certificate showing Consuelo's information and the names of her parents, Ysidro and Maria.
Regards,
Jackie

I would send a snailmail request to the appropriate registro civil. When I wrote for my grandparents birth certificates many years ago, there was about a 5 month delay. Write in castellano, of course, and be patient. The people who work there are doing this out of the goodness of their hearts in addition to their other duties. Also, they are probably swamped with requests right now due to the change in the citizenship law (lots of people applying for citizenship or, in my case, a second citizenship).

Art,
Great news! I just received her birth certificate today. Mara Consuelo Luis Dias y Canon was born on August 26, 1896 in Tremanes as expected.
I learned the full names of her parents and grandparents. Her parents were Ysidro Dias Varques of Quinos? and MariaCanon Rabanal of Leon.
Her paternal grandparents were Antonio Dias and Ramona Varques of Oviedo. Her maternal grandparents were Celestino Canon and Manuela Rabanal of Leon.
I read about the problems with Oviedo records prior to the 1890's. If I don't have the grandparents birthdates is there any way to obtain their birth certificates. Am I better off writing to the churches in the region?
Lastly, if I don't have the date of her marriage to Angel Ruiz, would having her folio number now assist me in getting a copy of their marriage certificate?
Thank you all for the encouragement received. The posting responses, and successes of others on the website really made me keep going, so two years after my mother tried to obtain Consuelo's birth certificate, that part of the journey has been completed. Now to see if I can continue to go back in time...
Best regards,
Jacqueline
