My name is Nina Olieman (de Lopez). Three of my grandparents came to the US from Spain - my paternal grandfather from Poza de la Sal, Burgos, and my maternal grandparents from Asturias. My paternal grandmother was Italian-American...her parents were born in Italy. So, I have always considered myself "3/4 Spanish, 1/4 Italian, and 100% American."
I have always identified closely with my Spanish heritage. I grew up near my mother’s parents, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey - so my life was full of the Spanish language, customs, family and friends…and foods. So many traditions and memories revolve around food, and as I see from reading your posts this is a very common thread!
I found this wonderful site in search of information about ‘bollinas.” I wanted to show a friend just what bollinas are, and to explain their importance in my family’s Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. My search for information about ‘bollinas asturianas’ led me to your forum.
During the summer of 2010, I hope to travel to Spain with my family. We want to take a general tour of the country, and at the end we want to visit Asturias, to finally see the place my grandparents called home. The Asturian-American Migration Forum will help me learn about Asturias as I prepare for this trip.
I know I will spend time reading your forum, and as my time allows, I will add my thoughts to this wonderful thread that links us!

Me llamo Nina Olieman (de Lopez). Tres de mis abuelos vinieron a los estados unidos de España - mi abuelo paternal de Poza de la Sal, Burgos, y mis abuelos maternales de Asturias. Mi abuela paternal era americana italiana…sus padres nacieron en Italia. Pues, siempre me he considerado “¾ Española, ¼ Italian, y 100% Americana.”
Siempre me he identificado fuertemente con mi herencia española. Como niña vivía cerca de los padres de mi madre, en Perth Ambos, New Jersey - así mi vida era llena del idioma, las costumbres, la familia y los amigos…y las comidas…españoles. ¡Tantas de mis tradiciones y recuerdos tienen que ver con las comidas, y al leer sus correspondencias veo que es un hilo muy común!
Encontré este sitio fantástico al buscar información sobre “bollinas.” Quería mostrar a una amiga exactamente lo que son bollinas, y explicar su importancia en las celebraciones de la navidad y el año nuevo en mi familia. Mi búsqueda de información sobre bollinas me dirigió a su foro.
Durante el verano de 2010, espero viajar a España con mi familia. Queremos hacer un recorrido turístico por el país, y al fin queremos visitar Asturias, para ver por último lo que era el hogar de mis abuelos. “The Asturian-American Migration Forum” me ayudará enterarme de Asturias mientras que hago los planes para el viaje.
