Descendants of Alonso Family from Candas/Perlora

Post by sbendayan »

--English
Greetings,

My name is Sam Bendayan..I live in Miami and was born in Madrid, Spain. However, my maternal grandfather (name of Florentino Alonso) was from the Candas/Perlora region of Asturias. He is also a descendant of the Rogrigues and Prendes families. This is a very small region...just wondering if anyone out there is from this region or has any ties to it. I have always been very fond of Asturias and I visit it every chance I get. If anyone recognizes the names or just wants to chat, send me a message!

Saludos,

My great grandmother, Tomasa Alonso, came to America from Gozón, which is near Candas. There may be a connection, who knows?

Family In Candas Asturias

Post by Paul R Dickinson »

Hello

I read your message about Family in Candas Asturias. I am trying to find anyone who can help me find out about Avelina Alonso.

I am trying to find out if anyone is familiar with Avelina Alonso, her
Brother Jose, and her Sister Amelita.

Avelina

She,and I assume her peers, were born in Naveces Castrillon Asturias
Spain.

She was born in 1899. She often told me how she loved living and playing
on the Bay or Ocean. Once she left Spain, although she had opportunities to return, she had no desire to return because she and her family lived in
poverty.

As a young girl, she emigrated to Havana Cuba with an Aunt and was
employed for a time as a Domestic for a wealthy family. Before leaving for USA, either in Spain or Cuba, she married Benjamin Fernandez. In USA, they had children: Evelyn, Raymond, and Aracely. In pursuit of work, they lived in Illinois and Ohio, before moving to Niagara Falls New York.

When she was about 19, she entered USA at New Orleans, LA.

I am looking for anything (Marriage License, Census, Shipping Manifest,
etc.) to be able to complete information for her family.

Jose

I know nothing about Jose except that he emigrated to Havana. When I
visited him in 1954 during the time of Batista and chose to stay there even though he could have left before Castro came to power.

Amelita

I know nothing about Amelita.

Sam

How far is Candas from Naveces? My Avelina Alonso came from Naveces. I am thinking that perhaps if I can find someone who lives in the Naveces area, they may know of the Alonso family or know an old timer who can help with pictures or information.

So far, my research show that Naveces must be a very small community. It does not appear on any maps that I have seen but I believe I came accross a College in the Naveces area.

I have found in the past that many times a family remains in the same general area for many generations. So if I find one Alonso, I may find more.

Candás, according to my old map is at the northwest corner of the Consejo de Carreño. Carreño is one "county" east of Gozón, but no more than a kilometer from Gozón. Candás in on the Mar Cantábrico.

Naveces is a good distance away from Candás--on the opposite side of Avilés. Of course, people from these areas may have known each other. (My cousin from Gozón knows plenty of people in Castrillon.)

Naveces is in Castrillon, which is west of Avilés and probably has Piedras Blancas as it's largest population center. Naveces is about 3 kilometers northeast of the "new" Aeropuerto de Asturias-Ranón (new in the sense that your ancestors wouldn't have known it!). Naveces is about half way between the Cantabrian Sea and the airport, right on what was probably the main road 50 years ago. Since it's not on your map, it's about 6 kilometers directly west of Piedras Blancas as the crow flies, and about 3 kilometers from the sea.

-------------

Hi Paul,

Naveces is in Castrillon, just west of Piedras Blancas and slightly north of it. It is very small. Candas is in Gozon, the next concejo to the east, between Luanco and Gijon.

Candás is about 21 kilometers from Naveces, as the crow flies.

Bob, Candás is on the border of Gozón, but actually lies in Carreño, I think. It seems to be the main town in Carreño.

------------

You're right, Art. That's what happens when I try to do these things from memory.

Alonso Family

Post by Barbara Alonso Novellino »

Hi,

My father's name was Julius Garcia Alonso...Alonso was his mother's maiden name. Her name was Dionisia Alonso. They came from Luanco, however, I heard my father mention Aviles and Gijon many times. My Grandparents Jose and Dionisia Garcia came to this country to work in the Zinc Works in Moundville West Virginia...they then went back to Spain and bought a farm, I believe in Luanco. My Father and Grandparents have since passed away...I believe the farm is still there run by a family who had taken care of my Grandparents and Uncle Ramon for many years.

I wonder if there is any connection...Barbara Alonso Novellino :D

Hi all,
I would just like to encourage all of you who know the names of your parents' and grandparents' hometowns to just come to Asturias and see those towns. Luanco and Candás are small towns between Avilés and Gijón, Perlora is right after Candás, and Naveces is right at Asturias Airport! It doesn't get any closer or easier for overseas travellers, for crying out loud! The old folks living there know everything about everybody who once lived there and who they are related to. But there's no time to waste, with the growing "second home" trend, these towns are changing rapidly and soon it will be difficult to find "natives" whose ancestors have been there for generations.

------------------------------------------------

Looking for Ascension Alonso or Garcia in Luanco

Post by adelealonso »

Hi- I've been posting the followng all over - maybe you can help

I am traveling to Luanco in September and want to visit my father's cousin. Her name is Ascension and all my cousin (who visited) can tell me is that he found the house by going to the cemetery and asking about Ascension.

Ascension is my father's cousin who took care of my grandparents until they died. I don't know her last name but it could be Alonso or Garcia. My grandparents names were Jose Maria Garcia and Dionisia Alonso and my grandfather's nickname was Figalone because there was a fig tree outside his house.

I would like to write Ascension to tell her I'm visiting and that I'd like to visit the farm where my father was born, but I don't want to just drop in.

Can anybody help me find her?

Adele Alonso

Prendes-Albandi....

Post by Marta Elena Díaz García »

Hello Sam,

There is a Florentino Alonso Rodriguez that lives in Albandi. He is about 86 years old, single, and has a sister, Maruja, that lives in Veriña (near Gijón).

The family of Florentino is from Prendes, where his aunt Felicita Alonso lived (this lady was very old when passed away more than 40 years ago). The family was known as "Casa Reguera".

May these persons be your relatives?.

If you give me some more data I could find more information.

Note: Albandi is the parish to which Prendes belongs. Both, Prendes and Albandi belong to the council of Carreño.

Marta.
