Manuel Cabo and S. Carreno adoptions by Diaz family in Riosa

Post by Joniwrite1 »

My grandfather, Santiago Careno (7/15/1894) and his brother by adoption, Manuel Cabo (b. 7/4/1892) were both adopted by the Diaz family in Riosa, Asturias, Spain around 1900.

The story is that the Diaz's had one daughter and no sons. Their tutor encouraged the boys to leave Spain for political reasons. Manuel settled in Los Angeles, CA about 1919 and Santiago followed soon after.

Santiago fell in love with my grandmother, Faustina Gutierrez Garcia, who was living with her sister in Ohio. They married and moved to Clarksburg, W. VA. I assume that he worked for the zinc smelter.

I was told that he got a job working for US Steel Corp. in the 1920's. The company took whole families by train to Pittsburg, California to start their new steel plant. There was a large Spanish Club there (I have a great photo of this group).

I'd love input on the families and welcome questions. I have family photos in Spain and the US to share.
