Ibiza in New Haven, Connecticut

Post by Bob »

Ibiza, in New Haven, Connecticut, is a reincarnated tapas bar (Pika Tapas) with far less emphasis on tapas and much more emphasis on traditional meals. The owner and manager (Juan Carlos) are gallegos. The chef is from San Sebastian. The restaurant is located at 39 High St., New Haven (865-1933).

The food is wonderful (especially the seafood dishes), although not inexpensive (but worth every penny). Even the less expensive Spanish wines are quite good. It has been quite difficult to get a table without an early reservation, especially on weekends. Reservations are now even more important since the restaurant (and its sister restaurant Meigas in Norwalk) were the subject of a major article in the June 30 edition of Wine Spectator (which focuses on Spanish food and wines). The Wine Spectator article points out that "it is definitely worth a detour up the New England Thruway (Interstate 95) to sample some of the finest Spanish food now being made in the United States." I agree completely.

A tasting menu is available Sunday through Thursday.

The April 2004 issue of Yankee magazine contains a review of Ibiza, and several recipes from the restaurant's chef.
