Hello Fellow Asturians,
My great grandfather, Luis Perez de la Mesa was born in Asturia and sailed the ocean blue from Spain to Tampa, FL in the late 1890's. I know very little about him except that he had a curly mustache, he was an ardent Roman Catholic, and when he met my great grandmother in a Tampa church, they married and moved to Havana, Cuba. I've tried the 3 websites previously mentioned by our excellent moderator, Art, to no avail. I thought this would be easy, as the surname Perez de la Mesa is not a common one (at least not in Cuba where they settled). I have joined ancestry.com which has a few hints, but no matches. My next search I suspect will be the Tampa Marriage records and/or church records. Anyone having any information regarding the Perez de la Mesa clan is cordially invited to contact me. My sincerest thanks...

Tampa Churches
The 2 most likely churches in Tampa would be Sacred Heart Church or Our lady of Perpetual Help Church. I don't know if they always had those names. DeMeza is a name I've heard here in Tampa. Have you tried looking for other variations of the name?

While I do not know of a Luis in my direct ancestry, my grandfather was Manuel Perez de la Mesa and born in Cuba in 1898. My understanding is that his father Manuel Felipe was also born in Cuba and he married Francisca Cairo from Islas Canarias. I do not have any records going back to Asturias from the Perez de la Mesa line nor from the Cuervo-Arango line of my other grandfather (also from Asturias).
