Martin de Arguelles, Jr. was the first known child of Asturian and European descent to be born in the now continental United States in the year 1566 in the Asturian City of St. Augustine, Florida. His father, Martin Sr. was the first Alcalde, ( Mayor), of St. Augustine. His birth was approximately twenty-one years before the English Colony was founded at Roanoke Island in North Carolina.
