Hello Everyone!
My name is Anna.I am writing on behalf of my sister Karen and myself.
We are so glad to have found you at the Asturian-American Migration forum, which I discovered a week ago, while my sister and I were attempting some family geneology research via the internet/Ellis Island.
Our maternal grandparents, Matias Pereda and Marina Fernandez, were part of the Jersey City Asturian community in the earlier 1900's. Matias Pereda (altho born near Leon, 1887) , immigrated to the US from Mieres, where he had been living and working as a coal miner. Marina Fernandez was born in Gijon in 1892, and immigrated to the US from Oviedo in 1911. They met and married in New Jersey, and resided in Jersey City, raising their four daughters. Our mother, Justina Pereda, the youngest, was born in 1922. Our mother, who is still living , remembers friends and acquaintances from the Jersey city group. "Pop" (Matias) worked at Standard Oil. Some family friends' names from these times are, in part, ...Brana, Guttierez, Lopez... We are wondering how many of you in the forum come from this Jersey City community!
The ancestry of our grandmother, Marina Fernandez, is shrouded in mystery. Her mother, Honesta Fernandez, (born Gijon approx. 1870)immigrated to the US (New Jersey) from Oviedo in 1913. Honesta had at least two brothers, Salvador and Jose, and a cousin , Robustiano, all Fernandez and all in Oviedo. We know of no other relations. We think Marina's father's name was Diaz, but we are not sure of this.
We are presently about to search birth records for our family in Gijon/Oviedo. We have found some excellent advice on how to do this from letters at this forum. We thank you very much! We now know the website through which we can likely do the search. Language presents some barriers, but we are hopefull that we can overcome this. We will likely have some questions along the way!
Outside of our geneology searches, we are delighted to access such a wealth of information about Asturians and Asturias! Having been involved in the arts all our lives, its wonderful to connect to the work of Asturians, and learn more about the arts and history of Asturias. We have always been so very proud of our Spanish roots.
We have some lovely photos of our Asturian family, a few of which, as time goes on, I'd like to post.
Sincerely,
Anna and her sister, Karen

Welcome, Anna & Karen,
I had at least one uncle who lived in Jersey City, I think. Unfortunately, my generation knows nothing about that! If you do a search on Jersey City (chose "Search for all terms" or "Buscar todas las palabras"), you'll see several messages about the Asturians who lived/live there.
When you're ready you can send me the photos at the address at the bottom of every page.

Bienvenidos, Anna & Karen,
