Buylla in SW, PA, USA

Post by botheration »

Hello, I just found this site last night while doing some random searches on the internet. I think it is a great idea. I am a Buylla by marriage, but I am as proud of the family heritage as my husband is. As he would say, I converted. The searches I was doing when I found this site were for the Spanish Club in Donora, PA and for the last name, Buylla. My husband's grandfather, Joseph Artimez was a founding member. My husband's father's family (Buylla) were also founding members. There was a post in your records that popped up regarding the club. The post talked about the type of things that my mother-in-law always spoke about from when she was growing up. We have many photo albums full of pictures from past Spanish Club sponsored picnics and activities. My husband does not have much family left anymore, and the ones that are left don't know too many of the details about our family, so I thought this would be a great way to broaden our horizons. I am looking forward to making new friends!

Welcome to the forum, Botheration!

If you would like to share them, we'd be glad to add a few photos to the photo album.

I stopped in Donora briefly last fall. I didn't see any signs of the Asturian community there. Are there any Asturian restaurants or anything like that?

Paramos un pocito en Donora el otoño pasado. No vi ningún indicio de la communidad asturiana allí. ¿Hay alguna restaurante asturiana o otro cosa?

Thank you for the warm welcome.

I will go through our family photos and try to find some good ones to post. One of my favorites is of my mother-in-law when she was about 6 (about 65 years ago) with her mom at a Donora Spanish Club picnic all dressed up in their Sunday best.

I don't think there is much of an Asturian community in Donora anymore. At one time it was the Asturian hub of the entire area. I think just about all that is left in Donora of the Asturian community now is the Spanish Club and from what I can tell the few times I've been there, it seems to have become just another club with very few Asturian members left. My husband and I have asked for information or pictures from the history of the club but all the members we spoke to have no idea regarding the club's past.

I wil check with my husband just to make sure, but I don't think there are any Asturian restaurants or other businesses.

Hi there and welcome,
I do believe that several forum members are related and found out about it by chance. I see that your husband's grandfather was an Artime(z), well there's other folks here, like D. Sweeney, who have grandparents by that surname. Check out the Genealogy Section of this forum.

Cheers

Good idea, Terechu! Using the "search" function (the button is at the top of the page) will quickly show all posts that relate to one word or several.

¡Un idea fantástico, Terechu! Por usar la función "buscar" (el bóton está a la parte superior de la página) se puede ver todos los mensajes relacionado con una palabra o algunas.

Thanks, I'll try that! My husband and I were talking yesterday and he reminded me that his father's family's original last name was Alverez-Buylla. He said we could probably find a whole lot more possible relatives with the full last name.

Well, that will be easier still! If the surname was Alvarez-Buylla, he is related to all the Alvarez-Buyllas of Asturias, who are not many.
Check out the Asturias White Pages:

www.paginasblancas.es

You will find several, just insert the name in the box "apellido" and select "Asturias" in the drop-down menu of the provinces. I even found one in Gijón who bears the surnames Alvarez-Buylla Artime - now if he ain't a relative....!

By the way, there is a famous, Mexican-born neuroscientist Arturo Alvarez-Buylla, who lives in the USA and whose parents are Asturians.

Hi Botheration,

Welcome to the Forum...

I had family living in Donora...My Uncle's name was Joseph Garcia (deceased)...

He had a son Raymond Garcia who still lives in Donora. Through the years I have lost touch with him, but I do know he and his family still live there.

Hi botheration,

Welcome again. Let me echo the request of Art to send in some of those photos from Donora. As my previoius posts have noted, my grandparents, with all their kids including my mom, lived in Donora about the same time as you have described for your inlaw grandfather. That would be from about 1910 on. The family name was Puente, my mother's full name was Maria Luz Puente Garcia Somonte Cabeza. I know that my grandfather was very active in the Asturian community of Donora, and my grandmother was a midwife. So send in those photos, I will be anxious to see if my grandparents or aunts or uncles turn up in them.

My maternal grandfather's name was Joseph M. Artimez(yVega).
He was a charter member of the Spanish Club of Donora,
Along with my paternal grandfather MANUEL A. BUYLLA.
Joseph M. Artimez was of no relation to any of the other Artimez family's
in this country, this he told me.
I have dozens of photographs from 1937 to about 1954 from Donora.
There are many of the Spanish Picnics in Donora going way back.
Most of them were taken by my father OSCAR A. BUYLLA.
Plus there are about 20 8mm films going back to 1956
But for good reasons of my own, I will never post those photos, Bethany.
