Are asturians going extinct ?

Post by ayalgueru »

It has to be said

For the 21st year in a row asturias has had the lowest birth rate of the whole of spain ... not only that , we win this one by large and far galicia being the second worst but even their rate being poor is substantially better than ours . And this is happening in Spain a country with an ageing population and fast becoming one of the oldest nation on the world .

Together with this we have the highest mortality rate ( no wonder us beign the oldest ) , very high suicide rates , young people leaving asturies looking for jobs ( oh sorry our socialist governement has confirmed this is just an urban legend ) and virtually no inmigration ( who on earth would come to live here in the light of circumstances).

Our demographic profile belongs more to a nation at war or a post communist wasteland ( which we kind of are) than to a rich western nation.

Some would be tempted to blame gay marriage , global warming or the decliene of the traditional "macho" asturianu .. but felow asturians ! do not jump into simplistic conclusions , just give some thought as to why people around you have no kids ?

I am really sorry to say this but this is nothing short of self inflicted genocide , asturies is going extinct with the complicit silence of the majority and the active role the ruling minority hooked on state subsidies and government hand outs of all shorts. Yes that people who really not care and would put up with anything as long as their needs are covered.

Solution is on our hands and we should once take our fate on our hands , but do we really want to ?

would the last one to leave/die switch off the light ? cheers

I'm sure that emigration is a big part of the explanation for the aging and shrinking population of Asturias. If the younger people move away to find work, birth rates that are expressed in relation to the current population will be much smaller. There aren't many people of my generation (I'm 61) still having chldren.

Still, I think the problem needs to be put in perspective. Birth rates have been falling precipitously in all developed countries. I can use my own family as an anecdotal example. My Asturian grandparents, who moved to the EEUU in 1913, had eight chldren. Six of them survived to adulthood. Those six had a total of 12 children (this does not quite equal the replacement rate). Those 12 grandchildren have a total of 12 children of their own, including 3 adopted chldren. This is far below the replacement rate. There are currently only 9 kids in the most recent generation (although some potential parents are just moving into the years in which they might be expected to have chldren of their own.

In any event, the reproductive trend is definitely downward, a simple fact that has been reflected in many studies.

As far as moving to Asturias goes, I would love to spend half of the year here in the EEUU and half in Asturias, but that is impractical beause of family obligations. If I were young and finding work were my primary concern, I'm not sure what I would do. I'm fortunate to have a very secure academic job (tenured professor of biology), but if I were just starting out, finding a good job either in Asturias or the EEU would be very difficult.

Ayalgueru, so you think we should all get busy making babies, eh?

More seriously, is the low birthrate one reason why the politicians are encouraging emigres to return?

By the way, what does Ayalgueru mean? Something like "a person with treasure?"

------------------

¿A propósito, qué significa ayalgueru? ¿Algo como "el que tiene un tesoro"?

Ah, ahora entiendo. Gracias, Argayu.

Oh, so that's it. Thanks Argayu.

(You've got to be careful with a treasurer who wants to find a treasure, don't you?!)
