I have enjoyed looking through your website and reading your discussions in the forum. I'm joining your group now, and perhaps later will be able to contribute to the forum.
My parents were both born in Cuba, and emigrated to the United States during the early 1960s. I was born here in the United States, in Yanton, South Dakota, and now live in central Florida.
My mother's side of the family originates from Asturias. Both of her parents were born in Asturias and emigrated to Cuba early in the 20th century, and then later emigrated to the United States along with my mother. My mother is the only member of her side of the family who was born in Cuba.
My father's side of the family has deeper roots in Cuba, and both of his parents were born in Cuba. Of my father's grandparents, one was born in Castilla, in Spain. All of his other grandparents were born in Cuba.
So, if I'm counting correctly, that makes me 1/2 Asturiano , 1/8 Castillian , and 3/8 who knows ?? (This last 3/8 is from my father's side of the family born in Cuba, presumably with Spanish origins, but I have no certainty from where.)
I have been very interested in my origins lately, and have a very strong place in my heart for the Asturian part of my background. I'm glad to have found the site, and I would love to learn more and converse more with all of you.
Greetings from Florida: JLP
