Although I can find no information on his parents, California-born Luis Walter Alvarez, was the son of Asturian immigrants.

A few years back the Asturian Savings & Loan (Caja de Ahorros de Asturias - Cajastur) hosted an extraordinary exhibition in their pavillion of Gijón's "Feria de Muestras" on Luis and Robert Alvarez.

Thanks Terechu. I have been well aware of the Alvarez contribution to evolutionary science for a long time (and teach it in my classes), but I had no idea that there was an Asturianu involvement.
