seronda (la) – fall/autumn - otoño

Post by is »

seronda: pronounced sah-RHON-dah, sustantivu (noun). Fall or autumn, the season between summer and winter. In the northern hemisphere it is the harvest days between the September equinox and the December solstice.

It may also refer to grass that is harvested later in the fall. In some western counties of Asturias, the word is interchangeable with setembrada or outunu/atunu.

By extension, seronda may also imply a season of maturity or decline, as in aging humans, or a late harvest due to bad weather, as in the verb aserondar.

Usage examples:

Nesta seronda feixo bon tiempu. (The weather was nice this fall.)
Na seronda, presta dir a la gueta pente los castaneiros. (In the fall, it is fun to go looking for chestnuts.)
Seria ya pel atunu, cuando a seronda. (It must have been in the autumn, at the time of the harvest.)
Dieron-y de baxa nel trabayu ya vieno pa casa na seronda. (He was given a leave from work and returned home in the fall.)
Na seronda de 1808 casouse con un tal Domingo. (In the fall of 1808 she married someone called Domingo.)

Idioms:

Na seronda la vida (in the autumn of life)
Fueya de seronda (autumn foliage)
