Hello to all:
I just joined yesterday. Found your site very interesting specially at a moment of my life when the asturian "morriña" begins to play an ever-increasing role.
We moved to the States 15 years ago having been born and raised in Oviedo.
My father was born in Bilbao although he moved to Oviedo at age 9.
My family, wife and two children (young adults in College) have lived in several places in the USA, from Denver, CO to Cleveland, OH and we have finally settled in Miami, FL after a 3 1/2 years stay in San Diego, CA.
I love Miami among other things, for the availability of all sorts of Asturian products. From Cabrales Cheese to a good fabada with authentic "fabes de la Granja".
Anyway, look forward to participating in the different forums and hopefully get to meet some of you soon.
One final question: Should I translate everything I write?.

Nos mudamos a los Estados Unidos hace ya 15 años habiendo nacido y crecido en Oviedo.

I had written my first posting just in English, and Ron mentioned a translation would be helpful for some of the people in the forum. Thats when I translated it to Spanish.
From your last names I can see your are also of spanish descent but, where from?

Welcome, Nacho!
Most of the American members have Asturian grandparents. In fact, a large percentage have strong links to the Avilés and Arnao area because their grandfathers worked in the zinc factory at Arnao and then came over in the early 20th century to work in the zinc industry in the US.
Our members are about half Asturians and half Americans. Translation really does help because a great many of our members can only read their native language.
You can edit your messages by clicking on the "edit" button that appears at the top right of each message. I usually post my message in one language first, submit it, and then click on "edit" to translate it. (I don't want to lose too much work if something goes wrong!) Once you're back in the edit box, just type a row of hyphens (---------) and add the translation at the bottom original message.

La mayor parte de los socios americanos tienen abuelos asturianos. De hecho, un porcentaje alto tiene relaciones en la zona de Avilés y Arnao porque sus abuelos trabajaron en la fábrica del cinc de Arnao y después vinieron aquí a principio del siglo 20 para trabajar en la industria del cinc en los EE.UU.
La mitad de nuestros miembros son asturianos y la otra son americanos. Es verdad que traducir ayuda mucho, porque la grande parte de nuestros socios sólo saben leer su lengua materna.
Puedes corregir tus mensajes por hacer clic sobre el botón "editar" o "edit", lo que aparece encima de tu mensaje a la derecha. Generalmente escribo mi mensaje en una lengua primero, lo fijo, y después hago clic sobre "editar" para empezar traducir. (No quiero perder mucho trabajo si algo sale mal!) Una vez que ves la caja de "editar" otra vez, puedes escribir una fila de guiones (---------) y agregue la traducción abajo del mensaje original.

I met and dated my wife of 26 years in Salinas. Although I've always lived in Oviedo, my family spent the summer months in Salinas. When kids we used to cross the tunnel from Salinas into Arnao and ride our bikes all the way Santa Maria of the Ocean beach (ahh!!!the good old times).
To all Asturians and Spaniard friends, good luck in today's election.

Recuerdo muy bien la zona entre Avilés y Arnao.
Conocí y empecé a salir con la que hoy es mi mujer de 26 años en Salinas. Aunque viviamos en Oviedo, mi familia pasaba los veranos en Salinas. Me acuerdo, de niños, de las excursiones que hacíamos cruzando en bicicleta el tunel entre Salinas y Arnao, siguiendo la carretera hasta llegar a la playa de Santa María del Mar (Ahhh!!! los viejos tiempos).
A todos los amigos Asturianos y Españoles, muchísima suerte en las elecciones de hoy.

I have been a member of the forum since 2003.
My father was Julius Garcia Alonso...he came to the United States from Luanco in 1906. His father Jose Garcia was a zinc worker. He came here from Luanco in Asturias with his wife and children, including my Dad who was an infant in 1906. My Grandfather worked in the smelter in Grassella but he and my Grandmother returned to Spain in the 1920's and bought a farm there...and that's where they stayed until their death. My Dad left West Virginia in the 1920's and attended Bliss Electrical School in
Washington, DC. He later moved to New York City where he lived until his death in 1988.
My mother was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia but her parents Adelino and Adelina Montes also came from Asturias...I am not sure the town. My Grandfather also worked foreman in the smelter in Moundsville, West Virginia.
So I am first generation to be born in this country on my Dad's side and second on my Mom's side.

I should have read some of the different areas in the forum before I asked you where you were from. I now know that you are a "veteran" in the forum and I am just only starting. Seniority rules.....
You know, I spent my teenage years living in Oviedo and moving to Salinas with the family over summer.
We had a great group of friends there (pandilla) and together we got into trouble all over Castrillón County.
Once we begun driving, we would to go to Luanco (sometimes fitting up to 9 people in my tiny car) at least twice every week to dance at a disco there called VALPA (Valparaiso) I don't know if it still exists.
Nowadays, I have great friends back there who move to Luanco every year during the summer months (June, July and August).
You all bring back such great memories.............
As I said, It is a pleasure getting to know you through these lines, and I am very glad to have found you guys.

Debería haber leído otras áreas del forum antes de preguntarte de dónde eras. Ahora sé que eres una "veterana" del forum y yo sólo un principiante. La veteranía manda.
Sabes, yo pasé mi juventud viviendo en Oviedo y en el verano nos mudábamos a Salinas con la familia.
Allí teníamos un estupendo grupo de amigos (pandilla) con los que nos metimos en líos por todo el concejo de Castrillon.
Cuando comenzamos a conducir, ibamos a Luanco (a veces metiendo hasta 9 personas en mi pequeño coche.) al menos dos veces por semana a bailar a una discoteca local que se llamaba VALPA (de Valparaíso). No sé si todavía existe.
Hoy en día, tengo muy buenos amigos que se mudan a Luanco todos los años durante los meses de verano (Junio, Julio y Agosto).
Me traeis tantos buenos recuerdos..........
Como ya dije, es un placer conocerte a través de estas líneas y estoy muy contento de haberos encontrado.

It is a very colorful port village.
There is a bar by the port where we used to have fresh fried calamari sandwiches in a french-baggette-style Spanish bread. It was heaven in a bun.
From the picture you send I see that the port was being worked on. That's too bad because it really is a beautifull fishermen small port. Did you try pouring apple cyder in a glass from up high?. Thanks for sharing Ron.

Es un pueblín con puerto, lleno de colorido.
Hay un bar al lado del puerto a donde solíamos ir a comer bocadillos de calamares frescos. Estaban buenísimos.
Por la foto que mandas veo que el puerto estaba siendo reparado. Que pena porque verdaderamente es muy bonito. Probaste a "echar sidrina"?.

Yo tengo 38 y he vivido los tiempos del Valpa. Nunca veranee en Luanco, pero en fines de semana pasados en Luanco recuerdo haber ido unas cuantas veces al Valpa. No tengo ni idea de si sigue abierto o no....
