Hi Folks,
My name is Maria Krane and I was born in Cuba and have lived in the United States since I was 3 years old. My great-grandmother, Juana Nido Rubio was born in Carlangas, Asturias in 1861. She travelled to Cuba, where my grandmother was born. I've just recently learned of her place of birth since we had been misinformed. I'm very glad to have found all of you.

Hola Colisteros,

Maria Krane (Florida)

Hi, Maria,
I don't know why, but when my grandmother came to the US, her brother went to Cuba. She went to Ellis Island. He had a son and daughter and worked in Cuba as a streetcar conductor for many years.

Dear Ron,
Although I can't say with certainty why my folks went to Cuba instead of the States its possible they had family or friends there. However, my husband's grand-aunt had to go to Brasil because she had something wrong with one of her eyes and was rejected at Ellis Island (even though his grandmother and another sister were already established in the U.S.). Immigration laws were tougher back then. Perhaps your ancestor had something that prevented him from entering the U.S. back then.

Estimado Ron,

Saludos Cordiales/Kindest Regards,
Maria Krane (Florida)

There were a lot of Asturians in Cuba. The Centro Asturiano in Havana is still an important landmark. My grandmother's brothers went there to make their (small) fortunes. Many ASturians who eventually came to the US lived in Cuba first, as my grandparents did. I think a lot of these patterns depended on where the individuals had friends and family.

Also, I think it was a lot easier to get into Cuba than the US.
