argayu: pronounced Ahr-GAH-yoo. Sustantivu (noun), plural form argayos. A landslide or mudslide as a result of heavy rains, snowmelt or earthworks. Any downward falling or sliding of soil, detritus or rock from a steep slope.
In Asturias, soil erosion is a common problem, particularly in the fall and spring when rain is intense. Country roads or train tracks are often blocked due to an argayu. In West Asturias, a large-scale landslide or mountain erosion is also known as a fana.
