Prendes, Garcia, Alvarez, Fernandez, Menendez

These families are part of my mother-in-law's surnames and she was born in Anmoore in 1921 as Ynes Prendes, her mother Ynes Fernandez and grand parents Manuel Fernandez and Carmen ?. The great grand parents
Jose Fernandez and Maria Menendez.

Her Grandfather was the brother of Cirilo Fernandez, the well known cigar mfg in Milwaukee Wi.

Her father was Amaro Prendes and his father Saturino Fernandez and Delfina Fernandez.

Her aunt was Etilvina (Thelma) Fernandez and she married Ramon (Ray) Garcia and they had 10 children born in/around Clarksburg.

Generosa Alvarez was the sister of Julia and Julia married Enrique Herperz
(Henry Herpers).

Any information about these families would be greatly appreciated.

Please check the spelling of these family names: Garica and Alverez. I've changed them to: Garcia and Alvarez, because those are much more common. If they really were Garica and Alverez, I can change them back.

Also, did you mean to spell Enrique's last name as "Herperz"?

Spelling is important in genealogical work. Obviously, there have been frequent misspellings in the past and we can't change that, but we honor our ancestors by spelling their names correctly now.

I must be getting punching, Garcia and Alvarez correct...

Yes Herpers was originally Herperz and the family was of German origin and migrated to Asturias from there. When Enrique came to the states he changed his name to Henry Herpers.

That's interesting that Enrique emigrated first to Asturias. Do you know if he worked at the Asturian zinc factory in Arnao or which town in Asturias his wife, Julia Alvarez, was from?

Maybe Terechu can tell us what the name "Herperz" comes from. I see that "herpetz" (a different spelling) means "anthropogenic" which is an adjective meaning "originating in human activity." It's used mostly in regard to environmental pollution and pollutants. I doubt that's related to Herperz.

Tal vez Terechu nos puede decir el sentido del nombre "Herperz". In the U.S. he worked at a Zinc Smelter like everyone else in those days. I would assume the same in Arnau. I am getting information from his
G Grandson next week.

There were some foreigners in the area, especially Belgians, because the Real Compañía Asturiana de Minas de Carbón (the company that owned the zinc factory) was owned by Belgians. The reason why I'm asking these questions is that the name Herperz may have been Belgian.

La razón por la que estoy haciendo estas preguntas es que el nombre Herperz puede haber sido belga. Habían algunos extranjeros en la zona, especialmente belgas, ya que la Real Compañía Asturiana de Minas de Carbón (la empresa propietaria de la fábrica de cinc) era propiedad de algunos belgas.
