I am researching my genealogy. My grandfather, Santiago Jamie Carreno Gonzales was born in La Viega, Asturias, Jul 15, 1894 to Jose Carreno and Antonia Gonzales.

He and one brother were adopted by the Diaz family of Riosa, Asturias as young men. The Diaz family had a younger daughter.

Santiago "Jim" moved to the United States and settled in California with his wife, Faustina Garcia Gutierrez of Piedras Blancas, Asturias.

I would greatly appreciate any appreciate information on these families.

Adoption records and Name Changes on Birth Certificates

My grandfather, Jim Diaz was born in Felguerano, La Vega, Oviedo (now part of Riosa, Asturias).

He told me his birth name was Santiago Carreno Gonzales and his birthday July 14,1894.

His mother died, then he lived at Children's Residence of Oviedo before being adopted at about age 10. his name was changed to Aquelino Jamie Diaz Cabo.

He Immigrated to the US in 1920 and naturalized in 1946. These records indicate he was born about 1897 as Aquelino Diaz and used Jim Diaz as his legal name in the US.

His death records show he was born 27 Apr 1897

I am trying to find his birth certificate. Are original birth records changed to the adopted name (Diaz Cabo)? Or should I be looking for the original birth records (Carreno Gonzales)?

I am finalizing my Spanish Citizenship and need this last paperwork. Any help would be appreciated.

Dear Joni:
I was looking for Felguerano, but the name of the place is Felguera. Until 1880, Felguera was the capital of the council of Riosa. Then the capital moved to La Vega. There are many interesting buildings in Felguera such as the Casa of la Corralá (XVIII c) , the chapel of Los Remedios (XVIII century).
As I told you, I'll try to find the baptism certificate of your grandfather.
Kisses,
Marta.

Thank you Marta!

Thank you Marta!

I appreciate all of your hard work. It is wonderful having someone in Asturias who knows where to look for information.

My posting was both to find my grandfather's birth certificate and to see if anyone might know of his family.

Thanks again Marta. You have been such a great help, and a good friend.
