Spelter Lost Another Son: Joe Menendez, Jr. 'Bigote'

SHINNSTON — Joe Menendez Jr., 95, a resident of the West Virginia Veterans Nursing Facility, Clarksburg, and formerly of C Street, Spelter, passed away at 4:10 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2011, at the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center, Clarksburg.

He was born at Zeising, now known as Spelter, July 12, 1915, a son of the late Joe Menendez, Sr. and Carmen Gonzalez Menendez.

He is survived by his brother, Frank Menendez, Spelter; two nieces, Linda Casar, Madrid, Spain, and Luisa Casar, West Orange, NJ; one nephew, Ken Menendez, Kansas City, KA; one great-niece, Laura Menendez, one great-nephew, Brian Menendez, both of Kansas City.

Joe retired from the Meadowbrook Corporation with 50 years service. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the European Campaign of World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post 31, Shinnston, and the VFW Post 573, Clarksburg. Joe had a gentle and kind spirit and was loved by all who knew him and those who worked for him. He will be greatly missed by his beloved brother, Frank.

Friends may call at the Perine Funeral Home, Rt. 19 South, Shinnston, from 2-9 p.m. Tuesday, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2011. Interment will follow in the Shinnston Masonic Cemetery where full military rites will be accorded.

Yes, he is in the Photo Album with Suronda. His nickname was "Bigote." I lived next door to him and his family in Spelter.

Thanks, Ron. I was afraid of that. I had no idea he was that age! What a deep source of experiences we've lost.
