Movie - Butterfly
This film, direct by Jose Luis Cuerda, tells the story of a young boy's coming of age during the Spanish civil war. The boy, Moncho, is afraid as he begins school, but soon discovers that his teacher accepts him for himself and opens his eyes to the world around him. As the civil war reshapes world views, everything changes, and not for the better. In Spanish with English subtitles, the film is well-acted and visually beautiful. It is set in Galicia, one province west of Asturias, which shares with Asturias its lush green countryside. It may have lessons--or at least food for thought--for a modern America on the brink of a war in Iraq.
