Alfonso Fanjul claims the "ruina montium" technique, which was believed to have been first used in Asturias by the Romans, might instead be in use already during Iron Age. This sophisticated mining method required detouring some stream or river as to wash soil away and concentrate the heavier mineral at certain location. Ancient Asturians apparently used this system not only in mining, but also when making defense ditches around some hillforts
Makes perfect sense: copper mines in Asturias were being in use thousands of years before Christ. It is worth noting too that Julius Caesar claimed that the Aquitanii, next to the Pyrenees, were "expert miners" and that much of mining vocabulary in Latin has a Spanish origin.

Thanks, Mouguias, that's a very interesting article. Is and Carlos showed me the remains of the ruina montium technique in Western Asturias, which is striking for the immensity of the destruction left behind by that method.
