Asturian Autobiographies in the US

One of our members, Corsino, has written a book about his life. He was born in Asturias, but was sent to France with a group of children during the civil war, and ultimately ended up in the US. A few years ago, he went to Spain and reestablished contact with family members who had long ago given him up for dead. He is now in the process of finding the other Spanish children who accompanied him to the US. Through his own determination, and with the help of members of our forum, he has already had quite a bit of success.

Corsino's book is in English, but I am sure that many Asturian readers would be interested in his story.

Hello Bob:

Thanks for the info. I guess I should send an e-mail directly to Corsino to give full detail of this work.

Thanks.

Welcome, Andrés!

As to the norms of the forum, we're pretty loose. It's always better to write in both English and Castilian if you can because many of our members only read one of those languages.

Some members write in Asturianu, but I suspect that very few of us can read that easily. When the topic is important we often ask for translations from those who can read it more fluently.

One norm we try to remind people of is that we shouldn't put email addresses in the forum because spambots will harvest them and send a ton of junk email. (We really should write these down!)

On to your topic: Another of our members Mdhsuarez is working on a book about the Asturian immigrant experience. You may want to contact her, too. You can read more about this here:

Same info in English

Hello Everybody:

This is my first contac with this group and didn't know I should include an English version of my posting. There it goes:
My name is Andres Villagra and I've been living in the Us for about 15 years now. I am originally from Oviedo and at present I am a professor of Spanish Lit. at Pace University in Manhattan, New York.

My research focuses on Spanish Autobiography. I have some academic work published on Spanish Civil War autobiographies and Hispanics in the US. Being from Asturias, autobiograhies written by Asturian immigrants are of much intesest to me. "The Academia de la Llingua" in Asturias has recently published my article concerning fictional writings published in Asturian language by immigrants residing in Latin America, but I could not find any work published in the US. Since I came across Gain Gonzalez work, I though I could write a book review of Asturian autobiographies written in the US. I think this compilation will be of great interest for the Asturian audience.
Any information on related work in any language is greatly appreciated.
Best regards,

The book about which you speak is not known in Asturias. It is translated, is the one who it could have read, nevertheless, it diffusion is minor. I know of it for references. A greeting

I just happened to see your post about autobiographies. I'm originally from Asturias and last year wrote my autobiography titled "Corsino". You can see a review of it on Amazon.com if you search under books for that title.

Link to "Corsino" on Amazon

Also, our group of Spanish Civil War refugees in the U.S. is in the process of writing our stories for circulation within our group. A preliminary version should be completed by the end of this year. But I don't know if it'll ever become a commercial book.

In my previous post I should have mentioned that a member of our goup, also from Asturias but who now lives in Caracas, Venezuela, has written a book which should be published soon, titled " Castillos de Arena".

Also, I should note that our group book titled "We Came Alone" will be partly in English and partly in Spanish. But no translations.

Hello, and regards to everyone:

I am Andres from New York. A couple of years ago I sent a request for autobiographical texts written in Asturian Language about the immigrant exerience in the US. I didn't have much success back then. I did get Corsino's book but not much more in the US. I did manage to write a study of several Asturian authors from the XIX on.
This year's project is open to other artistic representations whether in Castilian or Asturian. I believe this type of study can reach a wider audience. I am also considering a catalague of other type of media as well.
Please send me info at this wonderful webpage resource. I'll try to get back to you soon.

Hola Andrés,

While I don't write n'asturianu (I read it a little), I do write fiction based on Asturian themes and characters. I've been invited to read one of them as the Society for Literature, Science and the Arts meeting in Manhattan the weekend of November 10-12. It's entitled "The Gold Shop" and explores the relationships between real value and economic value. If you are interested, drop me an email and I'll give you the time and place.

This probably won't be much help, but our compiled stories of Spanish Civil War refugees that came to the U.S is available in a CD. Although it is mostly in English, portions of it are in Spanish. A few of the stories have been translated into Spanish by Terechu (in Gijon) and Paco Mori (in Oviedo), but are not in a CD yet. As I mentioned before, one of our members, Felipe Llerandi, did write "Castlllos de Arena" in Spanish. Although Felipe came with our group to the U.S., he now lives in Caracas, Venezuela.
Although our CD may not be of any help to your project, I'd be happy to mail you a copy if you are interested.

Hello Bob:

First, congratulations for this resourceful Asturian webpage. I see there is a lot of communication between members from the US and from Asturias as well.
I'll be glad to attend your conference in New York this weekend and we could meet then, if possible. My project is in initial state and I have to get permission to include texts in Castilian as well as in English. This is really the direction I am hoping to follow. Or, I just may write an additional paper for a different type of publicaition. In any case, I am very interested in reading your work.
On another note, the Centro Asturiano de New York is hosting a dinner this Saturday 11 at Marbella Rest. in Queens. They are having a bagpiper and dancing. I will not be able to atttend but I can give you more info, if interested.
cordially,
Andres

Hello Corsino:

I did read your book two years ago when I first wanted to develop this project. I did also looked for felipe Llerandi's "Castillos de Arena" but could not located in major national library databases. If you have another suggestion where to find it, please let me know. I definitely want to include your work when I get the Ok to include works in Castilian and English.
The CD on Spanish civil War testimonies seems a very interested project. Is there any publication, critical study included? I'll be interested to review it.

Cordially,
Andres

You won't find Felipe Llerandi's "Castillos de Arena" nor our "We Came Alone -Los ninos de la guerra" listed anywhere. They are self-published books and are not commercially available. Our book consists of approximately 20 stories written by the individuals recollecting their experiences escaping Spain, their stay in France, eventual trip to the U.S., and life thereafter.

I noticed that, in your message to Bob, you mentioned Centro Asturiano de Nueva York. Several years ago I had brief e-mail communication with a Juan Carlos of that group. Do you know him?
