We are trying to get in touch with the family of my grandmother, María Fernández Martínez, who was born sometime between 1879 and 1881 in the village of Trevías, part of the municipality of Valdés (in the county of Luarca), in Asturias.
She, with her mother, came to Cuba when she was 12 years old as a stowaway on the Barbarán. My father tells me that she received letters in the 1950s from a cousin but these letters were lost. It seems that in her old age she lost them or threw them out. I've not been able to find them in any way. My father is her only remaining direct descendent and now doesn't remember much due to his age, of course.
