No sé si hay alguien más en este foro que sea asiduo de Les Piragües, pero los que lo somos pudimos constatar que este año había mucha más gente mayor (de 50 para arriba) que otros años. Incluso estuvo la plana mayor del PP de Asturias, cosa rarísima en ellos. No nos lo podíamos explicar y creo que la clave me la dió una señora en la cola de los servicios del Café Campoamor de Arriondas. Era de esas mujeres que mi abuela llamaría "una señora muy fina", madrileña, muy de sport pero con ropa cara, y agradable. En las eternas colas de los baños las mujeres hablamos de todo, al tener que esperar a que algunas petardas se maquillen por completo (o lo que sea que hacen durante 10 minutos). Pues bien, esta señora y sus amigos se alojaban en un hotel de Ribadesella esta semana y su motivo para venir a Asturias (y asistir al Descenso del Sella, para codearse con la chusma) no era otro que el de conocer la tierra de la Princesa de Asturias. Quedé "plasmá"! Parece que el "Efecto Letizia" ya está dando frutos, no sé si para bien o mal. A los de Ribadesella ya se les está llenando el paseo marítimo de cotillas desde hace meses, eso seguro. En fin....

I don't know if anybody else in this forum attends the canoe festival (Fiesta de Las Piraguas) regularly, but those of us who do did notice that this year there were a lot more older people (50 and over) than in preceding years. Even the top dogs of the Asturian PP faction (Partido Popular, Conservative Party) attended, a rare ocurrance indeed. We couldn't find an explanation and I believe the clue was given to me by a lady while waiting in the bathroom queue of the Café Campoamor in Arriondas. She was one of those ladies my grandmother would refer to as a "well-bred lady", from Madrid, very nice and wearing sporty but very expensive clothes. Now in those endless bathroom queues, while we wait for those incredible pinheads to finish putting on their make-up (or whatever it is they do in the toilet for 10 minutes straight), we women get to talking. Well, this lady and her friends are staying in a Ribadesella hotel this week and their reason for coming to Asturias (and attending the canoe festival, to rub elbows with the mob) was no other than visiting the home region of the Princess of Asturias. I almost flipped out! The "Letizia Effect" seems to be bearing fruit, I don't know if for good or for bad. One thing is for sure, the beach promenade in Ribadesella has been full of busybodies for months. Oh well...

Yo no soy amigo de ir a las piraguas,mejor lo veo por la tele ,a mí tanta gente me pone malo, pero mi hermana no se pierde un año ,y cuando vino ,mi madre le empezó a preguntar como si fuera un detective y lo qué dijo qué había muchísima gente y mira por donde se encontró con nuestros primos ,qué por aquí nunca los vé y sin embargo entre tanta gente en las piraguas se vieron, ......!.el mundo es un pañuelo!Terechu ,estarás conmigo qué lo qué hicieron los ganadores no tenía qué valer o no?

I'm not one to go to the canoe race myself, I'd rather watch it on TV, all those people get to me, but my sister never misses out. When she came home my mother started asking questions like a detective and she said there were a lot of people indeed, and wouldn't you know it, she ran into some cousins she never sees around here and yet she saw them there in those huge crowds...it's a small world after all!

Jose, totalmente de acuerdo que bajarse de la piragua y cruzar la isla andando no es ético, pero el reglamento dice que el recorrido es del puente de Arriondas hasta el puente de Ribadesella sin salir del río - no dice nada de no salir de la piragua. Así que tecnicamente fue una estrategia correcta. Qué se va a hacer...

Deberías animarte e ir un año, hay ambiente para todo el mundo y todas las edades. En cuanto a tu hermana y tus primos, nosotros también nos encontramos siempre con "tou quisqui". Sin ir más lejos, este año conocí, por pura casualidad y porque entablamos conversación delante de un bar en Arriondas, a un pariente lejano de mi abuelo que aunque es de Ribadesella vive en México. Fue la monda! El viene con la familia todos los veranos y si no es por las piragüas nunca nos hubiéramos conocido! No te imaginas cuántos asturianos que viven en el extranjero vienen en estas fechas exclusivamente para poder ir a Les Piragües. Es una fiesta estupenda.

Jose, I totally agree with you that getting out of the canoe and crossing the island on foot is not ethical, but the rules are that the race goes from the bridge of Arriondas to the bridge of Ribadesella, without getting out of the river - they don't say anything about not getting out of the canoe. So, technically speaking the strategy was correct. Nothing doing then...

You should make up your mind to go one year, there's something going on for everybody and people of any age.
As to your sister and your cousins, we also run into everybody ourselves. In fact this year I met, by sheer chance and because we started talking in front of a bar in Arriondas, a distant relative of my grandfather's (and mine of course) who, though he is from Ribadesella, lives in Mexico. It was a riot! He comes over with his family every summer and if it hadn't been for the festival we would have never met. You can't even imagine how many asturianos living abroad come over around this date just to attend "Les Piragües". It's just a great festival.

Pues yo, como jomaguca,...

Demasiada gente y demasiado ruido.
Y eso que hace algunos años, hice una revista con un paisano (editamos el nº0), consegui una acreditación, para hacer un reportaje fotografico para el nº1 que nunca vio la luz. El asunto, es que a la llegada, estaba donde los medios para hacer las fotos correspondientes de los ganadores y "personalidades" y tal y tal, pero la verdad, estaba más atento a una camera"wo"man, de alguna televisión local. Estaba como un queso la morena... Pero el trabajo era el trabajo... bueno y que soy muy timido

There's too many people and too much noise, even though a few years back I edited a magazine with a hometown guy (we edited no. 0) and I got accredited to make a photo report for Edition no 1, which never saw the light. Well the thing is that I was at the finish line, with all the media and "personalities" and such and such, but in fact I was paying more attention to a camera woman from a local TV station. She was hot... But work is work ...plus I'm also I'm pretty shy

La última vez que tuve yo en Les Piragües sería hace unos tres años (ahora que me doy cuenta, el condicional en esta frase no me parece correcto castellano, pero en "casturiano" de la calle me suena de perlas...) . Ya entonces había gente a esgaya, así que no me quiero imaginar este año. A mi ahora me queda un poco lejos, que estoy al otro llau de la mar, como dicen algunos, y el "efecto Letizia" todavía no llega a tanto.

Voy a contar una anécdota que viene al caso. Cuando arribé a estas tierras de Nueva Inglaterra, hace un par de años, dentro de la comunidad hispanoamericana, donde hice buenas amistades, si les sonaba a algo aquello de "Asturias", especialmente a las féminas, era porque lo asociaban con un "príncipe bien simpático"... (donde "simpático" por esos pagos significa "apuesto", no sólo hace referencia al carácter). Ya me imagino dentro de poco, cuando al mencionar la tierrina, te salgan con un: "¡anda, donde la Leti!". Mira tú si no habrá otres buenes moces...

The last time I was at Les Piragües must have been three years ago, (now that I think of it the conditional in this sentence doesn't sound like correct Castillian, but in Street-Casturian it sounds just great!). There were already zillions of people then, so I can imagine what it was like this year. For me it's all a little distant now, because I'm on the other side of the Ocean, like some folks say, and the "Letizia Effect" doesn't reach that far yet.

I'm going to tell you an anecdote, when I first arrived in New England a couple of years ago, in the Hispanic-American community where I made good friends, the name "Asturias" did ring a bell, especially among the ladies, but mostly because they associated it to a very handsome (bien simpático) prince. Simpático over here also means handsome, and does not only refer to character. I can imagine that pretty soon when we mention our "tierrina" people will come out with: "Hey, from the same place as Leti!" As if there weren't many more handsome girls there ...

Esti añu si fui y bien que me lo pase. Esto de les piragues vienme de mio ma que yera tritona de chavalina y tovia sigue diendo.Eso si tengo quedar la razon a terechu que muncha xente habia n'Arriondes.
