Thank you Art for the warm welcome. I belong to several genealogy forums in trying to obtain more information on my maternal family roots who were all born in one area or the other of Spain. Since most of the information I seek is prior to the Registro Civil of 1870 and I don't have a lot of specific information like dates it has been very difficult.
My GGGrandfather's name was Manuel Barril Ventura. From a document I received from the Archivo Historico Diocesano de San Juan, Puerto Rico, I know he was married in PuertoRico in 1839 and that he was born (no dates) in Santander, Oviedo, Asturias. Now, in AsturiasGen forum several members tell me that Santander is not in Asturias but Cantabria and that perhaps the town was Lavander or Lavandera which is in the Obispado de Oviedo in Asturias. I rechecked the typewritten document sent to me and it says "Santander" but when carefully reading the copy of the church's record written in a very elaborate handwriting it looks like it could be "Lavandera". The information of the Obispado de Oviedo is correct, how do I find records for someone born in that Obispado in 1800-1810? Is there a central Archivo Historico Diocesano I can write to who would have information for me? I was told a lot of churches were ransacked in the civil war but as you mentioned here, copies of church records were sent to a central archive, where?
I appreciate your time and efforts. Now I will try to translate all of this into Spanish

Gracias. Esilda
