Una que se va!
A todos los miembros de este foro os deseo que tengáis felices Pascuas y un próspero Año Nuevo, salud, dinero y amor! Y a los que no las celebráis, pues feliz solsticio de invierno, o lo que os apetezca.
Nosotros nos vamos a pasar las fiestas con nuestros hijos y algunos amigos de Granada, pero amenazamos con volver la semana que viene

I'd be interested in hearing how our Asturian friends celebrate the holidays (Christmas, New Years, and the Visitation or Reyes).

Here, we usually go to a number of parties before Christmas with co-workers, family, and friends. Then the family gathers on Christmas eve (the night before) or Christmas Day. That's when we exchange gifts. Many people go to church on Christmas Eve, even if they don't go any other day of the year.

There may also be parties after Christmas, but not as many.

Then many people celebrate New Years by going out in public or by going to a private party on New Years Eve. The biggest public celebration is at Times Square in New York City. On New Years Day there are parades and popular "bowl games," which are (American) football games.

After that, it's over. I don't know anyone who does anything special for the visit of the three kings (Reyes) in January.

Me interesaría oír como nuestros amigos asturianos celebran la Navidad, Año nuevo, y Reyes.

Aquí, por lo general vamos a un número de fiestas antes de la Navidad con compañeros de trabajo, familia, y amigos. Entonces la familia se junta por la Nochebuena (la noche antes) o el día de Navidad (despues de Nochebuena). Con esta ocasión nos hacemos los regalos. Muchas van a la iglesia durante la Nochebuena, incluso si no van ningún otro día del año.

También pueden ser fiestas después de la Navidad, pero no tantas.

Entonces muchas personas celebran el Año Nuevo por salir en público o por ir a una fiesta particular por la Nochevieja. La celebración pública más grande es de vez en cuando lo de la Plaza de Times (Times Square) en la Ciudad de Nueva York. Durante el día de Año Nuevo hay desfiles y "juegos de tazón" populares que son juegos de fútbol americano.

Después de esto, no hay más. No conozco a nadie que hace algo especial para la visita de los tres Reyes en enero.

Art, yo voy hablar por mí, la nochebuena la pasamos en familia,la nochevieja cenamos también en familia,a las 12 tomamos las uvas y luego vemos la tele ,bueno mi hermana se va de fiesta y no aparece en casa hasta las 9 de la mañana,yo me voy a la cama y al día siguiente me cojo mi bicicleta y veo por la calle a todos los juerguistas qué van de regreso a casa ,después de haber pasado la noche de borrachera,a mi esos tinglaos no me van ,cada uno se divierte de una manera,y la mia es así.saludos

Question: is "tingao" Asturian for "mess"? Or is it an ironic way of saying "this kind of thing/silliness"? How should I translate it? I see that in Castilian "tinglado" can mean platform, shed, system, intrique, or mess. There's a verb "tingar", but it's Andean, not Castillian.

Una pregunta: ¿es "tingao" el asturianu que significa "follón"? ¿O es un modo irónico de decir "este clase de cosa/tonterías"? ¿Cómo se traduce? Veo que en castellano "tinglado"puede significar tablado, cobertizo, sistema, intriga, o follón. Hay un verbo, "tingar", pero es andino, no castellian.

The word is "tinglado" and it does mean "mess" , "confusion" etc in figurative speech. However, I believe the origin comes from the nautical term for "deck", boat decks being a "tangle" of ropes and fishing apparel - but that's my interpretation. Any seamen in the forum?

La palabra es "tinglado" y también significa "lío", "embrollo", etc. figurativamente hablando. Creo que es un término náutico para designar la cubierta de los barcos, que son un "tinglado" de cuerdas y aparejos de pesca - pero esa es mi interpretación. Tenemos algún marino en el foro?

Well, thanks to me, we're drifting far from seasonal greetings, but this is interesting! Thanks for the help, Jomaguca and Terechu.

A Jesuit priest once explained "follón" to me as a silent but stinky fart, something Americans call "silent but deadly".

It took me a while to realize that what I was hearing really was what he was saying.

What is "varullo"? The only thing I could find spelled similarly is "varillo" [marijuana cigarette]. If so would Jomaguca's phrase, "A mí, no me metas en esos varillo" mean about the same thing as "A mí, no me metas en esos follones"?

Una vez una cura jesuita me explicó que "un follón" es un pedo siliento que huele muchísimo, algo que los americanos llamen "silencioso pero mortal".

Me tarda un rato entender que lo que oí yo fue exactamente lo que él estaba diciéndome.

Qué significa "varullo"? La única palabra de ortografía similar que encontré es "varillo". Si es "varillo" significan las dos frases más or menos iguales?
