Greetings to everyone on this Asturian Board. I read through many posts in here before I decided to register, and ask questions.

My name is Román Toledo Casabona , my question relates to my Grandfather Jose Enrique Casabona , my aunts that are still alive tell me of a notebook she had in which he is said to have been born in Jovellanos , Spain in 1895 .

His mother's name was Panchita Casabona born in 1810 in Spain.

He traveled to Cuba in the early 1920's.

This is all the info she has and she is currently in Venezuela and has called her younger brother to see if there is more info.

I have 2 main questions and do not expect much, but do appreciate any info given and my thanks in advance.

1:I have gone to just about every link in this board and seems the Casabona surname is not to be found in Spain ( I do know about Italy )

2: is there a Jovellanos city? it seems all I found is places near Gijón España with the name of Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos
Our family tree can be seen here http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/17472087/family/pedigree
if you can't see it let me know.

Welcome, Román!

About Jovellanos, I don't see any places with that name in my book, but maybe it was something similar: Jomezana (there are two, Jomezana de Arriba is a beautiful place!), Joyana, or Jove de Arriba.

As for Casabona, have you tried the methods described in this thread:
http://www.asturianus.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3375

Hi Art it's great to be here with fellow History and Geneolgy aficionados. I love both and have been reading many of your and Bob's post about historical facts and loving every bit. Thank you for all.

I did indeed read the page in your link and tried all 3 and booked marked for future use.

All 3 pretty much said what a bunch of other web sites said ( BTW it looks like all these web sites are looking in the same database)

I had to burst out laughing , but sad at the same time as none showed up not even in the white pages.

It's funny my maternal grandfather Jose Enrique Casabona Whom I can follow because he was born in Spain,
but I can not get any info on him even though it's in a open country.

I guess I will have to turn up the heat on my aunt in Venezuela and her brother that is still in Cuba.

as for my father's line the " Toledos " and the " Yeras " , well unless I can find a way to get their birth certificates from Cuba I will be in a black whole for along time, they go back 2 or 3 generations in Cuba and then back to Spain.

Art is it "normal" behaviour for the window were a message is composed to saty put once you write past the bottom so taht you can not see what is being typed? it's the first time I have run into that. it's hard to compose.

----------------

Hello, again,

Is is possible that the name became misspelled at some point in history? Many immigrants couldn't read and write, so they may have relied on others to write their names correctly. Some of my family's names were butchered in the US (Emilio became Amelia, Menéndez became Manendez).

I've not seen the problem in the forum, but I have been having trouble with the message window staying put with the Firefox browser in Facebook, too, so it may be a browser problem. I can usually use the arrow keys to move up and down.

You can same some space in the reply window by not using the "quote" button. Most of the time quoting just makes it harder to find your message; it doesn't help us.

---------------------------

Success as I was watching "who do you think you are" I ssaw Susan telling her son to enter "Italian surname map" into Google , so I thought , let's try it again even though all the web sites I had gone to gave me the same info NONE.

This is where ity gets weird or I just goofed the first time there, and I gave up, but this time I went in by alphabetical and noticed that it said

Casaponsa hasta Caspe

so I clicked on the entry above this one "Carvajales hasta Casapie "
which is where Casabona should be and Voila! 435 persons found and the clue I'm looking for it seems that Saragosa has by far the most Casabonas and that province is close to Gijon , the only place where I see the Jovellanos name mentioned a lot since this the area where Gaspar Jovellanos was born as I recall from school.

so it seems like Saragosa is #1 and Barcelona is #2 and Tarragona #3, that gives me a clue were to look for a birth certificate.

You'll find similar results in the web of the National Institute of Statistics, reflecting the location of Spanish surnames (you can choose either by origin or by residence)
http://www.ine.es/fapel/FAPEL.INICIO
52% of the Casabonas of Spain are from Zaragoza.

As to Jovellanos, it is a contraction of the surnames JOVE and LLANOS, Jove being a district of Gijón. Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos was a native of Gijon, and the surname is exclusively theirs. Any Jovellanos you may find is descending from that family.

Hi Terechu , first thank you for many of the links you have posted in this forum, you are the third person I was going to mention on my answer above to Art , but could not rememer your name. I did not occur to me , what you said.

According to my aunt Violeta who lives is Spain , she also told me that he was form "Jovellanos" and somehow that seemed to me to be a city or a province. guess I wil have to look her up on facebook and ask her some questions. My wife reminded me of something I had told her 15 years ago, that my cousin Violeta's son asked for Spanish recidency and was granted that and that he was given Spanish citenship BECAUSE of our grandfather having been from there.

I can only assume, that they found the evidence, so that gives me a new trail to follow.

On a separate matter, I am having a lot of difficulty navigating this web site below

https://sede.mjusticia.gob.es/eCertific ... imiento.do

because of the terminology used for naming " things within " a web site like boxes and because my knowledge of Spanish geography and the names of the provinces is dim.

I tried asking for a "literal" copy of my grandfathers birth certificate and that alone has me confused as I do not know which one would be the easiest, also because the box or "field" which I finally understood this early morning to be "campo" for where he was born, would show these names but Zaragoza never would show up in ANY of the fields.

Let me ask this does "comunidad autonoma" does it mean City?

and "Provincia" where I thought Zaragoza would show up ONLY the following names show up, but no Zaragoza

Almeria
Cadiz
Cordova
Granada
Huelva
Jaen
Malaga
Sevilla

I Googled how many provinces in Spain and came up with

http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provincias_de_Espa%C3%B1a

thre are 50 provinces , so to ask in the hip and bulgar vernacular " whatup with these web sites in Spain ;) ) "

A comunidad autónoma is a regional administrative unit, larger than a provincia. Zaragoza is in the Aragón comundad autómona.

-------------------------

Una comunidad autónoma es una unidad administrativa regional, más grande que una provincia. Zaragoza se encuentra en la comundad autómona de Aragón.

"Autonomous Community" is another of those stupid expressions that don't mean anything and that has been used in post-Franco Spain to replace the word "region". Every Comunidad Autónoma" has one or more "Provinces", i.e. Asturias has one: Asturias!
If you're looking for Zaragoza Province, you have to look up the Comunidad Autonoma de ARAGON.
At all events, if you don't have the exact birth date and birthplace, sending a request via Internet won't work.

Now that you mention Jovellanos City, it is true that Gijon is often referred to the "Villa de Jovellanos". Who knows, maybe the registrar was in a poetic mood when issuing your grandfather's birth certificate? :-)

Oh, she must have meant the county Jovellanos (Province Matanzas) in Cuba!
Check out the Wikipedia, or simply google "Jovellanos+Cuba"

Well that NEVER occurred to me, but that would mean they left Cuba and went to Spain? . as I understand it , they left Spain and came to Cuba for the first time. and you could be right , because that timeline seems ODD to me left July 5 and arrived in August 4th, one month , you might just have discovered what I was not willing to see.

but it leaves me wondering for sure! meanwhile no one seems to be looking at their emails lately in my family, so no answers are coming ;)

It's very logical, he was born in 1895, the year when the "Guerra del 95" started, which ended in disaster for Spain in 1898, with the loss of its best loved colony: Cuba. Everybody with enough money and a Spanish passport scrambled out by any means available. :(
